Summer Party 2nd July 2023

The Summer Party was a great success!

Magpie and the Shiny Things played like there was no tomorrow - their clever arrangements of well-known and not so well- known musical classics providing a fantastic backdrop to the afternoon while the breeze died down and Elizabeth Park was dotted with little groups of folk (150+) chilling out and enjoying their picnics in the sunshine.

Our wonderful Councillor June Player made a special appearance to cut the ribbon and officially declare the

Queen's Green Canopy open.

(The Canopy consists of the 5 Liquid Ambar Trees at the western end of the Elizabeth Park. In time there will be a bench within the semi-circle.)

Over £700 was raised for the work of The Carers Centre. in the lower Bristol Rd. All of this came from the proceeds of the Cake Stall and Tombola, which were organised by the RCV Committee, All contributions of cakes and Tombola prizes came from Riverside residents - so well done all!

Sales of Tombola Tickets and Cakes were brisk all afternoon

Councillor June Player officially opened the Queen's Green Canopy

Jubilee Party 15th June 2022

The party committee of Flo Penfold, Hilary Lee, and Ali Penfold led by Andrew Vickers had worked hard for months on the organisation of the party in the park to celebrate HM The Queen’s platinum anniversary and our hopeful final emergence from Covid.

The band – Magpie and the Shiny Things – were great; Bath’s own minor royal Lady Margaret arrived to perform a sparkling opening ceremony in her chauffeur-driven Bentley; there was a quiz, a raffle and a cake sale with prizes and cakes generously donated by residents and all who attended had a wonderful afternoon. £500 was raised for Bath Welcomes Refugees.

Bath’s new Mayor attended with the Mayoress and said a few well-chosen words and Bath’s MP Wera Hobhouse - who is of course a local resident- enjoyed the afternoon along with many others.

The great uncontrollable variable was of course the weather. A cool breeze and impending rain on the day probably deterred many who otherwise could have enjoyed this splendid and memorable afternoon. Many thanks are due to all those who organised and contributed to the day.

The BRING AND SHARE PICNIC on SUNDAY, MAY 13th, 2018

The picnic was a great success with an estimated 100 people of all ages an sizes turning up to enjoy the company, the conversation, the fine food provided by those who attended and of course the excellent weather.

Thanks are due to Henry Brown and his team of helpers for getting the ball rolling and organising what we hope will be the first of many RCV social events.

We have a couple of found items: a 'Cook's Kitchen' tea tray and a 'Schinken Messer' knife. Let us know if you own either of these items and we will return them to your door.

John Crowe, RCV social secretary adds:

'I just want to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who came to the Bring & Share Picnic on May 13th. It was most encouraging to see so many people from all over Bath Riverside - a true cross-section of our community. Trish has
thanked the small sub -committee who organised the event. I would also like to mention Henry Brown for not only listing all the jobs we needed to do - but also for all he did to get the posters put up which made sure everyone
knew what our aim was - TO GET PEOPLE TO MEET NEIGHBOURS FROM ALL OVER BATH RIVERSIDE. It was wonderful to see everyone introducing themselves to each other and enjoying the food and drink we all brought with us.

It was such a success that I wonder if we might repeat it in the early autumn? Please let me know what you think. I can be contacted by email johncrowemessages@gmail.com or by phone on 01225 336839.'

HISTORY WALK - 14th July 2018

On Saturday 14th July Bath Riverside Walkers were treated to a history lesson during a pleasant stroll from the New Bridge by The Boatman Inn (built in 1734) along the towpath to Victoria Bridge.  Providing the historical detail and giving all those taking part renewed insights into this prime industrial area to the west of Bath, and most importantly into where Riversiders live today, was Mayor's Guide Mike Macklin.

Amongst topics covered by Mike were the brass-milling industry, from the early 18th century, through famous companies like Bath Cabinet Makers and Rotork to the prestigious Stothert & Pitt Crane-makers whose Victoria Works site is where modern Riversiders live today.

If you would like to see how Riverside looked in 1986, click here.

If you would like to join the walking group - send them an email.

RCV's John Ashbery has formed Bath Riverside Walkers group with the aim of loosely connecting like-minded people who like to walk as a form of relaxation and/or exercise. The plan is  to set up interesting walks in and around Bath that will cater for all levels of fitness and interests.

Members on the list will be able to keep in touch with each other and arrange walks at any time to suit the needs of the members.

If you are interested please contact BathRiversideWalkers@Riversidecommunityvoice.org.uk. Your name and email address will then be added to the walkers' list.

Likewise, if you have a walk you would like to share, simply let prospective walkers know the date and time to meet using the same email address.

Update from our Social Secretary - Feb 2018

Help and Hosts Wanted!

Social Secretary John Crowe set up brain-storming sessions in February to gather ideas from residents on how best to put together a social programme.. Here is his report on those sessions.

The “brainstorming” sessions on February 7th and 8th , attended by a total of 18 residents of Bath Riverside, added some new ideas to our list of possible social events.

Now we need people to come forward to offer practical help as leaders and hosts for smaller gatherings in apartments and houses, as well as leaders of outside activities.

Here are the suggested INDOOR events:
Bridge Club,
History group
Current Affairs group,
Occasional talks by an interesting local figure, or about an important local development,
Pub/Café lunch once a month,
Language group(s),
Chess club

OUTDOOR EVENTS  (Spring – Autumn)
Table Tennis,
Boules
Walking groups,
Bring & Share Picnics,
Cycling Group.

Those present on February 7th, 8th all agreed that it would be good to start to organize our FIRST EVENT ON SUNDAY, MAY 13th - A BRING AND SHARE PICNIC near the Victoria Bridge. A small group will meet at the end of February to start doing this.

Another small group will soon be publicising how a variety of walks, to suit different aspirations, can best be organized.

Apart from our website, we recognize the need for publicity through social media and posters in our buildings to encourage everyone, especially newcomers to Bath Riverside, to know about our social events. Our overall aim is TO MAKE EVERYONE LIVING HERE know that we are an inclusive community - young and old, families with young children, students and retired people - ALL ARE WELCOME!

Please send me an email or phone me on 01225 336839 with any comments or suggestions.

Not such a Silent Night

RCV Social Secretary John Crowe reports on a valiant effort by Riverside's carol singers.
carol singers
Because of the sudden violent storm which started just at 6.30pm on December 13th – the time scheduled to start singing carols round Bath Riverside – not many of “the Faithful” came to meet outside the Crest Marketing Suite – and they soon took refuge in the Royal View Atrium. When the rain started I myself went back to Alexandra House to get my umbrella. On my way back sudden, strong wind blowing heavy rain blew my cap off my head – never to be seen again – and I had to hold my umbrella with two hands to prevent it from being blown inside out!
Nevertheless the few who had turned up enjoyed singing carols in Royal View Atrium, which proved to have perfect acoustics. I was able to take £85.51 to the Genesis Trust office at the end of the week (made up from a collection from the carol singers and donations given to me subsequently). The Trust was grateful for our support for their work with the homeless in Bath. We are grateful to Eileen Vickers and Paddy Doyle for organising the event before December 13th.

Thinking about our experience since December 13th and because of the excellent insulation in all our homes, I feel very few people would have heard our carol singing if our planned itinerary had been blessed with good weather. I wonder what we might do next year. It certainly highlights the need for a communal space in Bath Riverside.

Thinking of singing carols inside if the weather is bad again, what better space than Royal View Atrium! On December 13th we were welcomed by some of the new residents there - so perhaps next year we might explore with the residents of Royal View the possibility of inviting everyone to come to this inside venue – and maybe plan for refreshments to be served after the carol singing! I hope we can.  JC
