The Riverside Book Group

The Book Group has been a tremendous success - and has now got a waiting list! All is not lost, however, as there is a possibility of starting a second group. Here's a report from organiser Penny Lorenc:

We have 11 members so are at full capacity, if there is any more interest in joining the group we will have a waiting list and there is always the possibility of starting a second group. We met in January and chose 11 books to discuss throughout the year. For the next meeting we are reading Cannery Row by John Steinbook, in March it will be George Orwell's Coming up for Air and in April the choice is Winter by Ali Smith . After that we have chosen Birdcage Walk by Helen Dunmore (a book about property development in 18th century Bristol), Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island and Luke Jennings' Codename Villanelle (the basis for the TV series Killing Eve).

We all suggested 2-3 books and the members present voted on them. We will take it in turns to host the group and one person will lead the discussion but we expect everyone to come along with thoughts and views on the books. We don't assume everyone will enjoy the book and in fact dislike of a book can help to provide a spirited discussion! A book group is a good opportunity to read books one wouldn't normally read, and to revisit classics and enjoy other people's opinions them. We hope to achieve all these things as well as enjoy socialising with other people who live in Bath Riverside.

Despite gloomy forecasts, the Riverside Picnic went ahead on 16th Sep and was greatly enjoyed by all who attended - once again some excellent food on offer brought by those who attended, and more neighbours getting to know each other.

Trish Fosbury, RCV's Chair, thanked Henry and Jane Brown and their band of helpers for their enormous efforts in bringing about a great community happening.

As already reported, Henry and Jane have called for a discussion at the next Riverside Community Voice AGM about the use of the spaces on the Riverside, to ensure that they are managed to the benefit of the people who live here.

Royal View Group now formed - details here

Coffee#1 Opening

Coffee shop#1 owned by Brains, Wales' biggest brewery and hospitality company, opened in Royal View on 15th August with the Pershore Town Crier standing on Victoria Bridge, and staff with trays of enticing goodies standing outside to attract custom.

Shortly after the advertised opening time of 11.00 the place was teeming with Riversiders keen to sample the offer (which included a complimentary hot drink).

If the initial reaction was anything to go by, this coffee shop will be a hit and a welcoming and comfortable place to have a drink and meet and chat or read your morning newspaper or surf and sip (Wifi on its way shortly).

Ward Boundaries - Riverside Residents Take Note!

Below you can see a map showing the changed Ward Boundaries in our area following the recent (2019) review. The old boundaries are outlined in blue, the new ones in red. As you can see the Boundary Commission listened to RCV and to our Councillor, June Player (along with, we believe, at least one Riverside resident living to the east of Victoria Bridge Rd) and have agreed with our request to have all of the Riverside development in the same ward: Westmoreland

Contact details for our councillors (both independent) are here

PARKING

• Crest, Pinnacle and Premier Parking discussed visitor parking spaces. New, more secure, permits will be issued to replace existing ones in July. The success of this new system will be assessed in future months.

BENCHES ON ELIZABETH PARADE

• The benches on Elizabeth Parade are due to be replaced (the ones currently in situ were not the original ones specified).

PROVISION OF A NOTICEBOARD AT BATH RIVERSIDE

• Crest is looking at the possibility of an estate office for Pinnacle at ground level somewhere on the development.

VICTORIA BRIDGE

• Two drain covers at the northern end of Victoria Bridge Road have been removed and replaced with timber covers. B&NES has cordoned off the area and is currently handling this. (Ed note - we think this refers to the southern end of the Bridge)

ART STRATEGY UPDATE

• Residents will be updated on all artworks via a leaflet in the Summer.

THE PARK

• The new park between Sovereign Point and Royal View is due for completion by the end of the year.

VISITOR PARKING

RCV asked Pinnacle recently to confirm arrangements for parking for residents’ visitors and received this reply

To summarise, there are 16 spaces available for parallel parking in Stothert Ave and 11 in marked spaces on Victoria Bridge Rd.

Note that the map supplied is in black & white, so where the letter refers to spaces ‘highlighted in yellow’ they appear as a shade of grey.
